***** ReadMe file for Transcribe! version 5.00 ***** All the information you need to use Transcribe! can (we hope) be found in the Help files supplied. To get started with Transcribe! you should launch the application and hit F1 to bring up "Help". Then read the "Overview". ***** What's new in version 5.00 ***** Adjustable EQ so you can emphasize the things you want to hear and filter out those you don't. This is five-band parametric, with a graphical display showing the resulting frequency response curve. See the "EQ Filter" command on Options menu. In the spectrum display you now get some help in identifying harmonics. If you click on the spectrum display Transcribe! displays a series of vertical lines indicating other notes which might be harmonics of the point you clicked, or of which the clicked point might be a harmonic. Not Just For Guitarists Only : the string & fret info given when you shift-click the piano keyboard currently relates only to six-string guitar in standard tuning. The new version has configuration options to specify how many strings and the tuning of each, and also the highest fret number to consider for alternate fingerings. This makes the feature usable for all conventionally fingered string instruments (bass, violin, etc). See "Fret Display Options" command. In version 4.00 if you have Transcribe! responding to MIDI then it continues to respond even when other applications are in the foreground. I did this because it can be very useful, but it turns out it can also be a nuisance, and can prevent the foreground application from receiving MIDI itself. So there is now an option to "release MIDI when in background". See "MIDI Options" command. Automatic subdivisions between markers - tell Transcribe! to generate extra markers to subdivide the markers you have placed into smaller divisions. This allows you to map out the measures of a whole piece very quickly (just place section markers every eight bars or whatever, then subdivide the sections) and it means you can subdivide a measure very precisely, if you are doing microscopic analysis of timing. See "Markers" in the Help file. When playback is looping : optional (adjustable) delay between loops, to give you time to think before it plays again. See the Program Options command. Changed format of the saved "XSC" file to use text in the file (instead of binary). This means that XSC files are portable between the Windows and Mac versions of Transcribe!, and also makes it possible to import marker position data into other programs such as spreadsheets. I have had communications from people using Transcribe! to analyze timings who would find this useful. See "Transferring XSC files..." in the Help file. In Program Options, allow setting initial loop mode as well as initial scroll mode. The "Compute Tempo" command now checks that all the between-marker-gaps in the selected section are approximately similar in size, and issues a warning if they're not. This is in case you accidentally put one marker on top of another, which would cause an incorrect tempo calculation. Right-click is now equivalent to shift-click on piano keyboard (to show string & fret numbers) and waveform profile (to extend the current selection). You can zoom the vertical scale of the waveform profile display with Up/Down Arrow. Keyboard shortcuts to allow instant selection of left-channel-only, right-channel-only, or normal mono mix, without the need to bring up the Mix dialog. See "Stereo Mix" command, Options menu. Keyboard shortcuts to "grab" a note - selects a little bit of sound centred on the currently playing point in order to loop and analyse the spectrum of that little bit. See "Keyboard Shortcuts" in the Help file. Keyboard shortcuts to de-select an existing selection. See "Keyboard Shortcuts" in the Help file. If you press 'S' 'M' or 'B' (to place a marker) while music is not playing the marker will be placed at the paused point if paused, else at the current point. This bypasses the dialog you get without . Contextual menus for placing/editing/deleting markers. Right click in the marker zone brings up a popup menu which provides an easy way to (for instance) change the type of a marker without having to go through a dialog. In version 4.00 when you adjust pitch (either in the Tuning dialog or the Playback Speed dialog) the speed also changes. Of course you can always restore the original speed with "Change Speed Only" in the Playback Speed dialog but we now have a "Synchronize speed" button in each of these dialogs and also on the toolbar, which sets the speed the same as the original, while keeping the pitch change. Bugfix : there was an occasional bug affecting some species of MP3 under certain conditions, where dropouts (brief silences in playback) would occur. I hope this is now fixed and apologise to anyone who experienced it.
